Norbert Mueller was born on January 21, 1914 and was the son of two musicians.  His father, Emmanuel Mueller, was a concert violinist who had emigrated to the US from Germany before Norbert was born.  His mother was Clara Hanusch Mueller, a concert pianist.  Norbert received his early musical training from his father. When he was sixteen, he became a violinist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony.  He joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1935 at the age of 21.  He played the violin in the symphony for 50 years until his retirment in 1985.  He especially enjoyed performing wth the symphony all over the world.  He also enjoyed encouraging young musicians as a teacher and a mentor.  When told that a younster was studying violin or viola, he would always ask to see their hands, checking for and approving the calluses that develop from much practice!  Norbert died on May 19, 1999.  He was Jean Olney's mother's first cousin.  (Mrs. Olney is on the Board of Directors for the Holland Symphony.)  Because he had no children of his own, the Olney family wished to do something for young musicians in his memory.  They knew that Mr. Mueller would be very proud of the young people who compete in the Holland Symphony's concerto competition and are pleased to be able to honor him through the Norbert Mueller Memorial Concert Competition Fund.
