Auditions, Spring 2024
Open Positions:
● Assistant Principal Violin ($88/service)
● Section Violin ($73/service)
● Sub-list auditions for other instruments will also be accepted.
Format:
● Preliminary Round: auditions will be by video recording (youtube link or mp4 file preferred). All video recordings must have the solo and excerpts performed consecutively and without stopping the recording device between them.
● Final Round: In the event that video recordings are insufficient to determine a position, there will be an in-person final round in Holland.
Dates and Locations:
● Preliminary Round: videos accepted through April 5.
● Final Round (if needed): Friday, April 26, 3:00-6:30pm, Hope College (Jack Miller Building, 221 Columbia Ave., Holland, MI 49423).

Repertoire:
● Preliminary (Video Recording) Round:
○ The exposition (or first 3 minutes) of a standard-repertoire concerto.
○ Four standard-repertoire excerpts of your choice, demonstrating a variety of stylistic and technical demands.
● Final (in-person) Round:
○ The exposition (or first 3 minutes) of a standard-repertoire concerto.
○ Standard-repertoire excerpts to be announced.
● Sub List (any instrument):
○ The exposition (or first 3 minutes) of a standard-repertoire concerto.
○ Four standard-repertoire excerpts of your choice, demonstrating a variety of stylistic and technical demands.
Holland Symphony Orchestra’s yearly calendar includes four classical concerts, two holiday concerts, two summer pops concerts, and one children’s concert. Chamber music and educational performance opportunities may be available. All positions have specific minimum attendance expectations.

Format: Auditions can be either in-person (Holland, MI), or by video recording (mp4 format).
Repertoire:
- Three minutes of any standard concerto, and
- Any four excerpts from standard orchestral literature.

Holland Symphony Orchestra’s yearly calendar includes 3 classical concerts, two holiday concerts, and two summer pops concerts. Pay scale for 2022-2023 is $32-55, depending on part assignment. A mileage stipend is sometimes available.

For membership in Junior Strings, students need 1 year of playing experience. Exceptions to grade level are possible with permission of the director. Call the office with any questions/or to sign up. No audition is needed but advance registration is requested.
Applications will be received throughout the summer. Audition videos for returning students (Junior Strings students auditioning for Concert Strings, Concert Strings students auditioning for HAYO, HAYO second violins auditioning for first violin) due August 1.
